Baltic water-plantain in Haparanda Archipelago National Park

Monitoring and sampling the Baltic water-plantain

The endangered Baltic water-plantain (Alisma wahlenbergii) grows in the shallow bays on the island of Sandskär in Haparanda archipelago. We travelled there in summer to snorkel and test a monitoring method of the plant that we’ve been trying out together with our project colleagues from Finland. We also took a few leaf samples which will be sent to lab to analyze the DNA of the plants. By analyzing the DNA we can get information about the different populations of the Baltic water-plantain and see how and if they are genetically related. This information is important when planning conservation actions and how to best preserve the species.
