Aquatic beetle (Macroplea sp.) field trip to Piteå, Sweden

In the beginning of August a group of SeaMoreEco members from Sweden and Finland met up by the coast in Piteå. The mission was to learn more about the aquatic beetle Macroplea pubipennis.

The beetle might not be more than a centimeter long but it has a considerable role in environmental management along the coast in northern Gulf of Bothnia. It is included in the EU Habitat’s Directive, and in Finland it is strictly protected. In Sweden it has not been know to exist until only a couple of years ago when it was found in the Bothnian Bay. By joining together from Finland and Sweden we hope to increase our knowledge about where to find the beetle and how to identify it in the field. Hopefully we can find new sites and populations of them in the future from all around the northern Gulf of Bothnia.
